Table Tennis (aka “Ping-Pong”) is a very popular sport in China, with Olympic gold medals to prove it! Everyone like to think of themselves as being an Andy Roddick when it comes to backyard Table Tennis, but how well do you really know the rules of the game? Today the SexyMandarin team have decided to serve and slam the basics you need to know in playing a game table tennis.
TERMS
Table Tennis – 乒乓球 pīng pāng qiú
Table Tennis bat – 板 băn
A sliced ball – 斜射球 xié shè qiú
Table Tennis net – 乒乓球网 pīng pāng wăng
Back hand -反手 Fǎnshǒu
Forehand –正手击球 Zhèng shǒu jí qiú
THE GAME:
Serve
Toss the ball into the air and hit it with your paddle. The ball should bounce on your side of the table first before making its way over the net.
Hit the ball back
When the ball comes to you, hit the ball back – make sure the ball bounces first on your side before going over the net once again. Do not let it bounce twice on your side of the table or a point will go to your opponent.
***NB: Do not hit the ball with your bare hand, or a point will go to your opponent.
What is it hits the net?
If the ball hits the net but still goes over, the ball is still in play!
If when you hitting the ball and it don’t go over the net, the point goes to your opponent.
Singles vs. Doubles
What are the rule changes between playing singles and double you ask? When serving playing doubles, the ball as always must bounce on your side of the table first, but be served at your opponent cross diagonal from you (e.g. if you are standing on the left of the table, serve it to the opponent on the right side – not directly in front of you).
In singles, you may hit to anywhere on the opposite side of the table – you do not have to serve across the court like you would in regular tennis.
First team to 11 points wins the game!
