To the onlooker, there is nothing more debonair than sitting at a casino table with a martini in one hand, cigar in the other and playing a game of Blackjack… but how well do you know the rules to the game? Here in another How to Series of the SexyMandarin Blog, the team have decided to put their cards on the table and reveal the basics in looking confident whist playing a game of Blackjack.
TERMS:
Blackjack -酒杯 Jiǔbēi
Poker Cards – 扑克牌 Pūkè pái
Ace – 高手 Gāoshǒu
King –王 Wáng
Queen –女王 Nǚwáng
Jack -千斤顶 Qiānjīndǐng
OBJECTIVE:
To have your hand of cards add up to as close/ to 21 points (i.e. Blackjack) without exceeding 21 points. In doing so, trying to beat both other card players scores and that of the dealer.
21 points = Blackjack
VALUE OF THE CARDS:
Ace = Can be both 1 and 11 points
King, Queen and Jack = 10 points
All other cards = the number that appears on the card
GAME:
The dealer shuffles the cards, place two in front of himself, two to the other players and two to you. Look at your cards carefully.
Do they add up to 21 points? How close are they?
IF THEY ADD UP TO 21 POINTS – Tell the dealer that you will “stay” or “stand”, meaning that you do not wish to bet anymore. You can hand gesture this by waving your hand to the dealer parallel to the table.
*** NB: 21 Points means you have attained “Blackjack”!
IF THEY ARE NOT CLOSE TO 21 – You can ask the dealer for another card to be dealt to you by the dealer by stating “hit me”. You can hand gesture this by tapping on he table whilst looking at the dealer.
IF THEY ARE CLOSE TO 21 – This is where you use your judgement. If you think you could draw another card and still remain under 21 points, you have the option to play on by saying to the dealer “hit me”. You can hand gesture this by tapping on he table whilst looking at the dealer.
If you feel confident that what you have in your hand could be higher in points than your competitors, you can opt not to have any more cards dealt by saying “stay” or “stand”.
IF YOU ARE DEALT ONE MORE CARD AND EXCEED 21 – You have gone bust, meaning you have lost the game.
THE BIG REVEAL
Everyone turns over their cards, including the dealer.
IF THE DEALER’S CARDS ARE HIGHER – Everyone loses
IF YOUR CARDS ARE HIGHER – You are the winner!
IF SOMEONE HAS BLACKJACK – They are the instant winner!
