There is nothing like relaxing with some friends, glass of brandy and playing a game of billiards – but how well do you really know the rules of the game? In today’s SexyMandarin Blog, the team have decided to translate the tools of the game in both Chinese characters and Pinyin, as well as some of the basics rules that we sometimes (maybe on purpose!) forget. Now you too can rack, stack and play the game like a pro.
TERMS:
Billiard Table – 台球桌 tái qiú zhuō
Nine Ball (Billiards) – 九号球 jiŭ hào qiú
Billiard Table Pocket -台球桌口袋 Táiqiú zhuō kǒudài
OBJECTIVE: – To sink all of your billiard balls first, then the black ball to win.
THE GAME:
1. Chalk up your billiard cue
2. Rack the billiard balls
Billiard balls come as a set of 15 with one black ball. This ball is to sit in the middle of the racked balls. The Rack is the triangle-shaped plastic, and is used to form the breaking shape.
Remove the plastic. Now you’re ready to play.
3. Line up the white ball
Carefully analyse where about on the white ball you want to hit, keeping in mind you want enough force to break the ball pack and start the game.
4. Break
Positioning the cue comfortably on the non-dominant hand as a guide, hit the white ball with the end of the stick into the direction of the racked balls, causing the pack to “break”. If you sink a ball, look at the pattern on it – there are two different looking types of balls in a game. Whatever you sink first will decide what you play.
5. If you miss the pocket, it is the next persons turn
*** NB: If you sink the opponents balls by accident, then it is the opponents turn as well
*** NB: If you accidentally sink the black ball whilst you still have other billiard balls. remaining on the table, you automatically lose.
6. First to sink all of their billiard balls, then the black wins!
*** NB: IF PLAYING 9 BALL RULES –
The balls must be sunk in number order, leading up to the black ball
